App Factory 2013-2014 Proposals due June 30, 2013 Sticky

Each year, the Wireless RERC’s App Factory invites experienced organizations or individual developers based in the U.S. to submit proposals for financial support to develop assistive and/or accessibility apps for mobile platforms (e.g., Android, Blackberry 10, iOS, Windows Phone).  Apps developed through this program include AccessNote by the American Foundation for the Blind, BrailleTouch by BrailleTech, LLC, and Sprint ID Accessibility Packs, Currency Identifier, and IDEAL Group Reader by Apps4Android.

Sprint Receives U.S. Disability Matters Awards

March 27, 2013 — On April 16, 2013, Sprint will be honored as the Marketplace winner at the Seventh Annual U.S. Disability Matters Awards Banquet and Conference for innovative accessibility solutions. Sprint will receive the award for the Sprint Relay ID pack and four accessibility-themed Sprint ID packs. The packs were funded and developed through Apps4Android and the Apps Factory project of the Wireless RERC.

Mobile Apps for People with Disabilities at ATIA Conference

John Morris, a Wireless RERC research scientist attended the Assistive Technology Industry Association’s 2013 Conference where he participated in the panel “Mobile Apps for People with Disabilities” at the Research Symposium on IDevices, Apps & the Cloud. The conference provided a forum for professional practitioners serving those with disabilities to communicate and participate in educational sessions. There were over 2,000 attendees for the more than 200 educational sessions at the conference, held in Orlando, Florida from January 30 to February 2, 2013.

BrailleTouch Now Available on App Store

BrailleTouch is a smartphone app that allows blind and visually impaired people to type on a touchscreen. It is based on the familiar six-key braille keyboard found on the Perkins Brailler and many electronic Braille notetakers. Both the free trial version and full version are available for download.  BrailleTouch was made possible, in part, by the Wireless RERC’s App Factory and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Announcing Healthy Environments and Active Lifestyles (HEAL) Open House

You are invited to join The Wireless RERC, the Aware Home Research Initiative, Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA), and others for the 4th annual  Healthy Environments and Active Lifestyles (HEAL) Open House on April 23rd from 5-8:30pm. NOTE The Date and Time have changed on this event.

The event will feature design projects from Wireless RERC courses as well as research projects and App Factory app demonstrations from the Wireless RERC and other related Georgia Tech organizations.  HEAL is a multi-site event taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.
