Jack is 62 years of age and has a progressive neuromuscular disease.  Despite his low income, he considers a mobile phone essential for people with disabilities who want freedom to get around by themselves.

Like many people unable to work due to disabilities, Jack receives Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Jack's monthly checks total about $900.

Jack considers a mobile phone a good idea for people with disabilities who want freedom to get around by themselves. He understands how risky it is without the ability to call for help if his truck breaks down or some other emergency arises.

But the monthly fees are too much for his budget.  So Jack bought a used refurbished cell phone and buys only the airtime minutes he needs for emergencies.  He finds himself much more comfortable in going places, especially driving alone, carrying his mobile phone along. He spends about $8 a month on pre-paid minutes.

Besides affordability, some important features of a cell phone for Jack are:

·         One-hand operation (left- or right-handed)

·         Non-slip covering to avoid risk of dropping his phone

·         Hard (“not rubbery”) buttons

·         Light weight

·         Minimal keystrokes for dialing or getting through menus

·         An accessible way to carry it and keep it handy when using crutches
