Problem
- User with communication disabilities encounter obstacles when interacting with emergency personnel
- E911 Centers cannot receive text messages from deaf users
- Power Wheelchair users may have difficulty using wireless phones to contact emergency personnel
Approach
- Explore emergency communications problems and potential solutions in an undergraduate course, Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing
- Develop and evaluate prototype solutions to improve communications capabilities between deaf and hearing communities in emergency situations
- Develop prototype solutions to improve communication capabilities of power wheelchair users in the event of an emergency or need for assistance
- Distribute a free applet to deaf users of the most popular wireless devices in the deaf community to enhance communications
- Disseminate findings to industry
